Project Description
A three-story staircase doesn’t whisper—it makes a statement the moment you walk in.
This residential staircase painting project was completed in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, inside a multi-level family home where the main staircase serves as a central architectural feature.
The scope of work was extensive and highly detailed. Four Pillars Paint handled full wallpaper removal across the entire three-story stairwell, followed by skim coating, wall repairs, woodwork restoration, priming, and final painting. Every surface within the space was addressed, including ceilings, walls, balusters, risers, trim, and doors. Given the height, complexity, and visibility of the area, precision and planning were critical at every stage.
The project was completed in seven days, with a total investment ranging from $12,000 to $15,000. This pricing reflected the labor-intensive nature of wallpaper removal, the uncertainty of wall conditions beneath the coverings, and the detailed finish work required throughout a tall, open staircase that connects multiple levels of the home.
Background/Story:
Ryan wasn’t just buying a house—he was building a home for his growing family.
When he purchased the property, he knew the staircase would be one of the first spaces to address. It was the visual spine of the home, but layers of old wallpaper and worn finishes made it feel dated and unpredictable.
Ryan’s biggest concern wasn’t just how the space would look in the end. It was the process. Wallpaper removal is notoriously uncertain, and he wanted to work with a team that would be transparent, realistic, and fair about what might be uncovered behind the walls.
From the start, Four Pillars Paint focused on setting clear expectations. We explained that wallpaper removal often reveals hidden damage, uneven surfaces, or previous repairs, which can’t always be anticipated upfront. Instead of promising perfection on day one, we earned Ryan’s trust by outlining exactly how we would communicate, document findings, and price repairs reasonably as they arose.
That honesty shaped the entire experience. What could have been a stressful renovation became a collaborative process built on clarity, respect, and consistent communication.

Results:
The transformation was both visual and emotional.
Once the wallpaper was gone and the surfaces were properly repaired, the staircase finally felt cohesive. The choice of Shoji White throughout the space unified all three levels, allowing light to move freely and making the tall stairwell feel open rather than overwhelming.
The woodwork, once worn and inconsistent, now looks crisp and intentional. Balusters and risers stand out in the best way, adding structure without visual clutter. The ceilings, walls, and doors work together as a single, refined design rather than competing elements.
Ryan’s reaction said everything. He appreciated not only the final appearance but the way the project was handled from start to finish. The clear communication, fair approach to unexpected repairs, and respect for his family’s home made the experience feel manageable and trustworthy.
For Four Pillars Paint, this project is a reminder that great results start with honesty. When expectations are set clearly and craftsmanship is handled with care, even a complex three-story staircase can become a welcoming centerpiece that supports family life for years to come.
