How to Choose a Color by Category

A fan deck holds thousands of chips and no starting point. Picking a color family first cuts the list down fast. Each family below behaves differently on a house in Greater Pittsburgh Area. Some read completely differently on brick than they do on siding. Use these as a filter. Bring two or three finalists to the consultation, and we will test them on your actual surface.

White is the hardest color to place, not the easiest. Pure white reflects what is around it, so it picks up green from a lawn and orange from brick. Most homes sit better in a white with a slight warm or gray base. Warm whites read soft and full. Cool whites read crisp. The undertone matters more than the name on the chip.

Greige is a gray with a warm base. It is more forgiving than a cool gray next to warm brick or stone. Beige runs warmer still and leans toward tan. On a home with red or orange brick, greige or beige usually sits better than a cool gray.

Blue holds interest without shouting. It works on full siding and on smaller accents. On siding, blue reads much darker in shade than it does on the chip. Deep navy has been steady across Greater Pittsburgh Area. Always view a blue sample on the shaded side of the house first.

Greens have moved from accent color to primary siding color on a lot of homes. Sage and olive tones sit well against the mature trees most established Greater Pittsburgh Area neighborhoods have. Deeper forest greens carry weight and read almost neutral from the street. Green reacts strongly to nearby foliage, so test it in summer if you can.

Tans, taupes, and browns hide dirt and pollen better than lighter colors. That matters for a home under heavy tree cover. They also pair naturally with stone and cedar. The trade-off is contrast. If the trim sits too close in value, the facade can flatten out from the street.

Black and near-black have become common on newer construction and modern remodels. Dark colors absorb more heat, so the surface underneath matters. Deep colors are generally safe on wood, fiber cement, and masonry. On vinyl siding, they are only safe within the Sherwin-Williams VinylSafe range.

Red is rarely a full-body color, and it carries well on smaller surfaces. Deep reds with brown or rust tones read calmer than a bright, true red. Red also holds the highest fade risk of any family. Saturated reds carry more pigment, so they show change under UV before neutrals do.

Soft yellows and golds suit older housing stock, and Greater Pittsburgh Area has plenty of it. Muted golds read historic, while brighter yellows draw the eye. Yellow reflects a lot of light, so it looks stronger at full scale than it does on a chip. Sample yellows at full scale and view them in full sun.

Testing a color is not one step. It takes three steps, and each one cuts the list down further. Chips take twenty options down to five. Samples take five down to two. Full-size boards confirm the one that goes on the house.

Color Chips

Chips are a filter, not a decision. They are printed, not painted, so they sit one step away from the real finish. Use them to cut a list of twenty down to five. Look at them in your own home at three different times of day. Hold them against your own floor or your own brick, never under store lighting.

Peel and Stick Samples

Sherwin-Williams sells peel-and-stick samples and Color to Go sample pots. Both let you see a color in the room where it will live. Peel and stick moves around the room without patching. Sample pots let you paint a real patch of the real surface. This is the step where five colors becomes two.

Then we look at direction and light. We check which walls face north, which take afternoon sun, and where trees throw shade all day.

From there we build a short list, usually two or three colors for the body and one or two for trim. You take samples home. When you are ready, we put your finalists on the house at full size.
